Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young has been praised by some Darlington supporters

as “better” than Jordan Pickford at the same age.

Under the direction of former Newcastle United player Steve Watson,

the 17-year-old goalkeeper went on loan to the National League North team earlier this season as

The Quakers faced relegation.

But since coming to Darlington, the team has triumphed in ten of the thirteen games in

which Young has started, and on Saturday afternoon, they defeated Farsley Celtic 3-1 at home to guarantee their safety. After the match, Young received Darlo’s Young Player of the Season award.

Young is now being compared to Jordan Pickford, the number one player for Everton and England,

who similarly came up through the Academy of Light’s ranks following a 2012 loan stint of 17 appearances at Darlington.

Simon Brodie, a Darlington supporter, posted on social media, saying, “At this age, he’s better than Pickford.” more collected. Simply radiates his assurance. Although it’s on a different level,

I’m saying it now: he will be England’s number one in the future. He is the genuine article.

Another admirer of the Quakers said, “He’s been absolutely fantastic!!” Should Patterson relocate this summer! Matty Young would be more than willing to take the lead!

On social media, a different Darlington supporter wrote: “We’ve been fortunate to have had you playing a huge part in that.” Matt, we’ll be rooting for you throughout what looks to be an incredible career.

“You possess the courage and the heart of a lion,” Sue Shaw continued. You’ll succeed in reaching the very top. We appreciate you allowing us to meet you up close and for assisting Darlo in improving their situation. I wish you well going forward.

From Jarrow-born Jimmy Thrope in the 1930s to FA Cup-winning hero Jimmy Montgomery,

to England international Pickford and current Sunderland number-one Anthony Patterson,

who played in his club’s 105th consecutive league match against West Brom last Saturday,

Sunderland has a long and illustrious history of producing outstanding goalkeepers.

In addition to Young, Sunderland’s youth divisions boast a number of excellent goalkeepers,

including local talents Dan Cameron, Adam Richardson, and Ben Metcalf.
