Although the Foxes dominated the early exchanges, Plymouth opened the score at Home Park thanks to a quick counterattack by the hosts that allowed Mustapha Bundu to burst down the left flank before curling a good finish into the bottom corner. Patson Daka had perhaps the best chance of the game just before the hour mark, but his close-range effort went agonizingly across the face. This setback further bolsters Leeds United’s hopes of securing automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The Whites knew they would stay in third place on Friday night whatever of the outcome in Devon, but if they defeat Blackburn Rovers on Saturday afternoon, Daniel Farke’s team will be back at the top of the Championship for a few hours at least. Leeds would top the division by two points with three games left if they prevailed at Elland Road.

They would fall to second place, though, if Middlesbrough defeats Ipswich Town, the title contenders, at 3 p.m. Even though Leicester’s advantage in the title battle is starting to wane, they still have a game in hand over Leeds and Ipswich.

A week from now, on Tuesday, Leicester will host Southampton, another team vying for promotion, at the King Power Stadium. The Saints’ chances of winning that day could permanently harm the Foxes’ chances of earning automatic promotion.
