The Dallas Cowboys‘ lack of engagement in free agency has resulted in very few headlines this offseason.

But there has been a lot of NFL news on Dak Prescott’s contract negotiations, and more details about the talks

between the two parties are now available.

Since the team was ousted from the playoffs, there appeared to be a lot of back-and-forth between Dallas and its star

quarterback. Although CEO Stephen Jones stated that the team “absolutely” wants to extend Prescott’s contract,

team owner Jerry Jones pushed back on the idea.

Prescott and the Cowboys have a “mutual understanding” of his circumstances, according to a March report by Ian

Rapoport of NFL Network, and he is expected to become a free agency in 2025. After hearing that the two parties

desired an extension, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports disputed that a few days later. Things have changed again as of

late.

In an appearance on SportsCenter on Saturday, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler clarified that the Cowboys are

approaching contract negotiations with Prescott in a “passive” manner.

The Cowboys’ deliberate approach to contract negotiations makes sense on the one hand.

Given Prescott’s dismal playoff performance history, Dallas might be a little uneasy about the current projections for

the next long-term contract, which place an extension around $55 to $60 million per year.

But letting this drag on until 2025 will only make matters worse.

Because of his contract, Prescott is not eligible to wear the franchise tag, which opens the door for him to sign a free

agent if a deal isn’t reached. In addition, if he departs, Dallas will be responsible for a $40.46 million dead cap

charge in 2025. Furthermore, the Cowboys would be in grave danger of entering quarterback purgatory if they lost

Prescott.

Dallas won’t be in a position to select a top quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft since it plans to contend for a Super

Bowl the following season. NFL teams aren’t very excited about the 2025 quarterback class, even if the Cowboys

trade up for a premium choice the following year to replace Prescott.
