Steve Bruce was astounded when referee Tim Robinson failed to award Leeds United a penalty during a heated match against Sunderland on Tuesday (9 April).

The two Championship clubs drew 0-0, with the Whites failing to capitalise on Leicester City’s surprise defeat to Millwall.

Leeds might have secured all three points with a penalty, putting pressure on the Championship’s top two teams, Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

Bruce commented live on Sky Sports News (9 April, 9:37pm): “The referees had a good look at it.” Where’s VAR when you need it? He [Luke O’Nien] has basically punched it.

“It comes in from a corner, and O’Nien, who has defended well all night, raises his arm for a clear penalty.

In the Premier League, that would be stopped and a penalty given, which is the correct decision.

Leeds United fail to capitalise against Sunderland at Elland Road.

While he will be angry by the handball decision in favour of the Black Cats,

Daniel Farke will be most disappointed with his team’s dismal performance in front of their home fans.

The Leeds team provided little threat going forward, with Sunderland attacking at the opposite end of the game,

but neither pair of strikers could find the back of the net.

VAR may have been useful throughout the competition.

The referee also missed a handball call when Crysencio Summerville’s shot struck Daniel Ballard’s elbow.

Despite the failed penalty calls, Leeds should have taken control and increased the tempo instead of focusing on what could have been.

Championship opponents Leicester offered Leeds a clear path to the top of the table, but the Whites squandered the opportunity, going scoreless for the first time since December.

Ipswich Town will feel like true winners after Tuesday, as they prepare to face Watford at Portman Road on Wednesday, April 10.
