A new update on Will Still’s future at Stade de Reims appears to have given Sunderland an advantage in their quest for a new manager.

The Black Cats have been without a permanent manager since February,

when former manager Michael Beale was sacked following only 12 games.

In the meanwhile, assistant manager Mike Dodds took up the job,

and the search for a replacement is scheduled to be completed this summer.

Still, who is presently playing in Ligue 1, has been identified as a potential target,

and an update from his current club appears to provide a positive signal to those at the Stadium of Light.

Reims prepares substitutes for Still.

According to reports, Still’s current employers are putting together a list of potential

replacements for him in the dugout at Stade Auguste-Delaune.

Still has been strongly connected with the Sunderland position,

therefore the fact that Reims feels the need to devise a backup plan appears to be a boost to those hoping he will be appointed at the Stadium of Light.

He has previously stated that he intends to coach in England at some point and that he is willing to manage in the Championship

while currently functioning in France’s top division.

Still is one of Europe’s most promising young coaches,

and made headlines last year when he was given to the top job at Reims despite not having completed the necessary licenses,

resulting in the French club paying a fee every time he managed a game.

The hierarchy there held him in such high regard that they believed paying the fine on a regular basis made the most sense.

It would be a great appointment for the Black Cats, therefore Sunderland fans will be pleased with this development.

Dodds appears unlikely to be considered in the interim.

Those who want to see a fresh face in the dugout are constantly concerned that the person named interim will be given the position on a permanent basis.

Dodds, who has taken over as temporary manager at Sunderland on several occasions,

appears unlikely to take the post full-time, as the 37-year-old is aware that coaches are being interviewed for the position.

He has also mentioned his potential position when the new boss takes over.

There could have been a talk if he had come in and propelled Sunderland up the league,

but since his appointment as temporary manager, the Black Cats have only won once and are currently unable to reach the play-offs.

Dodds is respected within the Stadium of Light and is likely to take up another role after this summer,

but his performance as manager is unlikely to unsettle any plans to appoint a successor.

The hunt for a new boss can accelerate now that the season has practically over.

Sunderland has only four games left in the season and has the potential to accumulate 12 points if they win every one of them.

With them presently 15 points below Norwich City at the bottom of the play-off standings,

the Black Cats’ chances of a late sprint towards promotion are effectively dashed.

While this may appear to be a pretty flat finale to a difficult season,

it does give the added bonus of allowing the powers that be at the Stadium of Light to begin to expedite their manager plans.

The noises emanating from Stade Auguste-Delaune appear to be promising for Sunderland’s managerial prospects,

but they must take advantage of their position and act quickly before it is too late.
