After Rangers captain James Tavernier made a mistake that allowed Celtic to score their opening goal at Ibrox,

Andy Halliday called Tavernier one of the worst professional football players with a weak foot.

Daizen Maeda’s opening goal in the Old Firm came about because of Halliday’s prediction that Tavernier would own

up to his insecurities.

The former Ibrox player questioned the defender’s decision and suggested that instead of attempting anything

spectacular, he should have just thrown the ball back to Jack Butland in goal.

Halliday said, “That’s the real error; just pass it back to Jack Butland,” on the Open Goal podcast on April 9.

That is not necessary for you to do.

“You know how I feel about Tav? He acknowledges that he has a weak foot and is among the worst professional football players.

“I believe it’s one of those where he’s attempted to hook it around with his right foot because he’s not comfortable using his left.”

James Tavernier gets a fit from Andy Halliday following Rangers’ defeat to Celtic.

Given the date and result of the game following the incident, this explanation for his error makes it slightly more

understandable, but it will still be frustrating for everyone connected to Rangers at Ibrox.

Halliday is not the first to find fault with Tavernier’s acting. The captain was referred to be “terrible” by former Aston

Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor, who also forecasted that he would not play for a top-half team in the English

Championship.

The entire effort at Ibrox was unsatisfactory, even though the match ended in favor thanks to an equalizer from

Rabbi Matondo in the 93rd minute. But after conceding two goals, the players deserve some criticism.

The reaction to Tavernier makes sense; he was responsible for what turned out to be a game-winning goal against the

Old Firm at Ibrox. However, it’s time to move on, as the captain needs to get back to his best for a crucial encounter

against Dundee next.
