they still have a few months until they can start adding players to their roster.

After only 51 goals so far, the Black Cats will undoubtedly now aim to add some experience to their youthful squad.

They will also be keen to finally bring in a proven goal producer.

Keeping hold of their top players, though, might be their hardest obstacle.

Despite all of them signing new contracts in the past year, players including Trai Hume, Dan Ballard, Anthony Patterson, Dan Neil, and

Dan Neil have all been linked to moves to the Premier League.

One player who hasn’t put pen to paper on a new deal is Jack Clarke, and it now seems extremely unlikely that the winger will be at

the Stadium of Light next season.

The Black Cats have already been linked with a number of replacements for the 23-year-old, though finding someone to fill the boots of a

winger that can reach the numbers he can will be extremely difficult.

‘Special’ star wins award after four goals in five games

Mikey Johnston, who is presently on loan at West Brom, is one name that has lately been suggested to transfer to Wearside.

Last month, former midfielder Carlton Palmer discussed Johnston’s future, saying:

“He’s had a fantastic time since joining from Celtic on loan.”

“Yes, a lot of teams will be watching how he plays, so you’ll be looking at teams that are considering players moving on; players like Jack

Clarke and [Jon] Rowe will be leaving, and Mikey Johnston will be considered as a potential replacement.”

Johnston has drawn attention since joining The Hawthorns, scoring seven goals and dishing

out one assist in just 14 Championship appearances.

Palmer was crowned the Championship’s Player of the Month for March after he made

note of the “special” 24-year-old joining Sunderland.

In just five games for West Brom last month, Johnston notched four goals and an assist as the Baggies won four and drew one.

The attacker faced competition for the prize from Leif Davis,

Gabriel Sara, and former Sunderland striker Ellis Simms.

Should Sunderland try to sign Mikey Johnston?

Johnston will have likely attracted even more attention picking up the award, with his loan spell with the Baggies set to come to an end next month.

It is unclear whether Celtic will look to sell the winger this summer,

though they could look to cash in as he enters the final 12 months of his contract.

Sunderland won’t be the only team pursuing him if they choose to, as West Brom may try to sign him long-term,

particularly if they are promoted.

The Black Cats may have made a very wise acquisition, and since Clarke is expected to depart for a large salary, they should have no

trouble competing financially for his replacement.
