£360k-per-game: Ipswich Town cost compared to Leeds United and Leicester City is scary

The Tractor Boys are hopeful of achieving automatic promotion from the Championship this term

Ipswich Town is just four games away from a spectacular return to the Premier League after another successful season under Kieran McKenna.

The Championship season appears to be coming to an exciting close at both ends of the table,

but all eyes will be on the top, with Leicester City and Leeds United both planning a quick return to the top flight.

The Tractor Boys host Middlesbrough at Portman Road on Saturday afternoon,Ipswich Town General Portman Road

knowing that three points will keep them ahead of Daniel Farke’s side and within striking distance of the Foxes.

What has been most impressive about Ipswich’s season has been their ability to keep up with the three relegated clubs,

who have benefited financially from the Premier League’s parachute payments, with astute recruitment vital to their success.

Following their promotion from League One, McKenna set about upgrading his squad, which had just 98 points and 101 goals in the third division.

The Tractor Boys’ most prominent summer arrivals were Jack Taylor and George Hirst,

who arrived from Peterborough United and Leicester, respectively,

while McKenna’s links to old club Manchester United proved handy as Brandon Williams joined on loan.

In January, Ali Al-Hamadi signed a permanent move from AFC Wimbledon, and Kieffer Moore,

Lewis Travis, and Jeremy Sarmiento were loaned out.

Those signings, combined with the players already there and McKenna’s management,

have won them 88 points and 26 victories at this point in the season,

and according to Transfermarkt data, they are among the top five teams in terms of cost per victory when looking at their roster.

Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers top the rankings,

spending an average of £156,000 on players in their squads who have resulted in victories,

followed by Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle,

while Rotherham United and Preston North End are just behind the Tractor Boys’ impressive record.

The findings demonstrate the exceptional recruitment supported by Chairman Mike O’Leary,

especially given the stark contrast with the sides around them in the table.
