Sunderland’s Championship rivals next season hit with points deduction – and will lose more

Potential Championship rivals of Sunderland for the upcoming campaign will begin the campaign two points behind

the others.

Sheffield United will begin the following season with a two-point deduction if they are demoted to the division,

according to an announcement made by the EFL.

The announcement was made on Thursday afternoon following the delivery of the decision by an impartial

disciplinary commission. When the Blades earned automatic promotion to the Premier League under Paul

Heckingbottom in the 2022–2023 season, it was determined that they had violated EFL regulations.

The EFL claims that the club’s payment defaults to other clubs eventually amounted to more than 550 days.

A additional two points might be deducted from the team, but that penalty would not apply until the conclusion of

the following campaign. If the club misses more than five days in making any payments it owes other clubs,

the additional penalties will take effect. Additionally, the club has agreed to pay £310,455 in EFL charges.

As things stand, Chris Wilder’s team is nine points out of safety at the bottom of the table and looks certain to be

demoted from the Premier League at the end of the current season. The punishment will take effect the next time

they drop into the EFL, if they manage to survive.

The Blades issued a statement confirming that they will not be appealing the decision and that the case is now closed.

The statement read, “The club took the view that it was better to reach an agreement which minimised the risks of a

higher deduction or further transfer embargoes being imposed, and being distracted by lengthy and costly legal

proceedings. “The club was disappointed to have the deduction imposed upon the return to the EFL and highlighted

that awaiting overdue monies from several other clubs effected Sheffield United‘s financial situation. The club can

finally put this behind it and focus on the future.
