$100,000 Fine: Patrick Mahomes’ Punishment announced by NFL after investigations.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid have been penalized by the NFL for their comments against the officials from the previous weekend. The league forbids protesting in public while officiating.

The offsides call on wide receiver Kadarius Toney, which negated a thrilling touchdown late in a 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills, infuriated Mahomes and Reid. The Chiefs believed there was no need for a penalty at that point in the game, despite the fact that replays made it quite evident that Toney had lined up improperly in the neutral zone.

The NFL declared that Reid had received a $100,000 fine and Mahomes had received a $50,000 fine. Mahomes was also fined for unsportsmanlike behavior, specifically for using abusive, threatening, or derogatory comments toward referees. Both of them were punished for breaking the rules pertaining to public criticism of game officials.

After the game, Mahomes cried, “It’s hard to swallow.” “You want to see the men on the field decide the game, not just from me and football in general, to take away talent like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that. They are people. They commit errors. However, we discuss stuff once a week. The call is this. Right then and there.”

He went on, “Not for me. to having a flag alter the game’s result. Offense offsides have never been called against me. They alert you if that happens. The entire game was played without a warning. And then, in the last minute, you make a call like that? We’re discussing about the referees in another game. We don’t want that for the NFL. We don’t want that for football.”

In addition to those comments, Mahomes seemed to furiously address the officials from the sidelines during the loss. Kansas City might not have anticipated the penalty after ESPN revealed this week that the NFL might have overlooked Mahomes and Reid’s actions. However, they should have known better—NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, in an unusual move, chastised their news conference shenanigans this week.

“I find it a little ironic when you say attention on officiating when I think almost everybody, to my knowledge, is acknowledging that the officials were absolutely correct,” Goodell told the media. It is their responsibility to signal a foul. That foul was unquestionably committed. It was unquestionably the proper decision. It goes without saying that we or our officials would have faced criticism if you hadn’t called that.

“We all understand our officials are second-guessed,” Goodell said. They are not flawless, as I have stated numerous times before. Nobody of us is. However, the truth is that they perform really well. As previously stated, I find it odd that I’m standing here responding to a question about how the officials handled things well while they’re receiving flak. It demonstrates, in my opinion, how challenging their work is.

“I am aware of it and that it is a requirement of the job. The officials are aware of this, but I’m really proud of what they did in that game as well as what they’re now doing.”
