According to the most recent report from journalist Florian Plettenberg,
it may only be a matter of time before current Sporting Lisbon head coach Ruben Amorim is prowling around the Anfield touchline as Liverpool’s new manager.
Since Xabi Alonso disappointed several clubs by remaining loyal to Bayer Leverkusen,
Amorim is said to have verbally agreed to a move to Merseyside at the end of the season,
by which time he may have achieved a top-flight and cup double with Sporting.
While there is still the little matter of negotiating his leave from the Portuguese powerhouses,
Amorim is reportedly pining for the Liverpool position, and the 39-year-old is expected
As Liverpool’s present squad members adjust to this seismic shift, Amorim,
along with sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of Football Michael Edwards,
will go to work finding areas for development for the 2024-25 season.
Defence is thought to be a priority area for Premier League and Europa League championship contenders,
who are desperate for more alternatives in the heart of their backline and may also look for a new midfielder and winger depending on departures.
With that in mind, Sports Mole has identified four current Sporting players who could follow Amorim to Anfield.
Due to Joel Matip’s expiring contract, Ibrahima Konate’s fitness difficulties,
and Virgil van Dijk’s contract ending in the summer of 2025 – though the Dutchman will almost certainly be renewed –
at least one new centre-back should arrive at Anfield for the 2024-25 season.
