Misfit Rangers After scoring in four straight games for FC Utrecht of the Eredivisie, Sam Lammers has maintained
his scorching form. Fans of the Dutch team are anxious to see him sign a long-term contract.
Arriving at Ibrox last summer for a reported fee of around £3.5 million from Italian Serie A team Atalanta, the
attacking midfielder failed to impress fans in his first half-year in Glasgow, managing just two goals before
temporarily returning home until the end of the campaign.
Lammers disclosed last week that the reason he failed at Rangers was because he was never used as an all-out
striker, a role he currently does in the Netherlands. Furthermore, Ron Jans, the manager of Utrecht, has urged him
to stay where he is desired and not go back to Govan to be a reserve after his spectacular scoring run in recent weeks.
Since returning to Dutch football, the 26-year-old has hardly missed a beat, and his impressive displays have split
many Gers fans on what should happen to the loan star when the summer transfer window opens.
Under former Gers manager Michael Beale, the Lammers generally played as a number 10, but they failed to create
much of an impression, and not even the entrance of Philippe Clement could ignite their Ibrox career.
The former Sampdoria star has been nothing short of a revelation, playing as a center forward now that it’s his
natural position. His double in the weekend’s 3-2 league victory
over Heerenveen bolstered Utrecht’s play-off ambitions.
It also took Lammers’ tally to seven goals in just 13 appearances, as well as contributing a further eight assists and he
etched his name into the Dutch football history books in the process by becoming just the third player this century to
score in five successive games for Utrecht.
He appears with former AZ Alkmaar hero Ruud Boymans and former Liverpool fan favorite Dirk Kuyt, who manages
Beerschot in the Belgian second tier.
Unsurprisingly, Utrecht supporters are thrilled with Lammers’ contribution thus far and are requesting that the team
do everything within their power to have him return for the upcoming season,
even if they are unable to pay Gers’ reportedly £2.5 million asking fee.
