Close Friends, Hidden Battles: Dier Regrets Not Doing More to Help Alli

Eric Dier and Dele Alli, once shining stars at Tottenham, share a deep friendship that extends beyond the pitch. However, a recent interview by Alli revealed a hidden world of struggles, leaving Dier with a heavy heart and a well of “what ifs.”

For seven years, their bond blossomed at Spurs. But Alli’s path took a turn, his form and fitness dipping. In 2022, he moved to Everton, yet to find his footing there.

The turning point came in July 2023. A raw and emotional interview with Gary Neville exposed the depths of Alli’s pain. Sexual abuse at a young age, drug dealing at eight, and a battle with addiction and mental health – the details were harrowing.

Dier, now on loan at Bayern Munich, expressed his deep sadness, “It’s difficult for me to talk about Dele,” he admitted. They stay in touch, but the interview left a heavy mark. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the whole video… He said some nice things about me, but it works both ways.”

While fans approached Dier after the interview, he emphasized Alli’s loyalty too. “Dele is a special person,” Dier recounted a touching moment of support. “He came [to my wedding] and was there for me.”

This revelation spurred a wave of regret within Dier. He wished he’d been a better friend during Alli’s darkest times. “I’m disappointed that I didn’t do more,” he confessed. The lack of the full picture, him being the “annoying older person” as he described himself, all contributed to a feeling of missed opportunities. “There’s a lot of things… I have a lot of regrets and there were certain times that I wish I did more.”

Alli’s struggles continue. Since joining Everton, he’s only played 13 games, his last appearance in August 2022. A difficult loan spell added to his woes.
