Sunderland are taking their time choosing a new manager following the disastrous appointment of Michael Beale earlier in the season,

and a number of other names have been linked to the position.

Beale was fired after only 12 games in charge at the Stadium of Light,

having taken over from Tony Mowbray in December and winning only four games in that time as the Mackems fell out of playoff contention.

Mike Dodds was designated temporary manager until the end of the season as the Wearsiders sought to steady the ship before choosing a new manager,

however recent results will have done little to lift the mood in the north east.

With Paul Heckingbottom, Will Still, and Danny Röhl all rumored to be in the running for the next job,

another familiar face appears on bookmakers’ odds lists: former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Palmer: Solskjaer ‘would be a wonderful recruiting’ for Sunderland

The Norwegian has not worked since leaving Old Trafford in 2021,

when his three-year reign as manager of the Red Devils ended following a string of defeats to begin the 21/22 season.

The 51-year-old has previous managerial experience in his birthplace with Molde,

where he won two national league titles and an ill-fated spell in charge of Cardiff City in 2014.

Despite his lack of recent managerial experience,

former Sheffield Wednesday star Carlton Palmer feels the ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ has the potential to turn things around on Wearside next season.

Speaking exclusively to FLW, Palmer stated: “Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn’t worked since he was fired as manager of Manchester United in 2021, after three years in the position.

“Solskjaer certainly won’t cost them any money,

so it’s more a matter of whether Ole would be interested given the constraints that Sunderland wants to work within.

“That entails signing very young players with minimal experience, paying them a low fee, and then selling them for a high price.

“Ole would obviously want to get back into management and Sunderland are a big club.”

Sunderland’s record-breaking performance in the 23/24 Championship season

Sunderland have gained a reputation in recent years for their commitment to developing young players,

regardless of age, and providing them with valuable Championship experience.

Jack Clarke is a great example of this, with the 23-year-old already played over 80 games for the club and

being linked with a £20 million move to a number of Premier League clubs as a result of his outstanding performances.

Another example of a star receiving plenty of game time is 16-year-old Chriss Rigg,

who became the club’s youngest goalscorer in League Cup history earlier this season against Crewe Alexandra.

The Black Cats consistently had the Championship’s youngest average age starting XI,

and earlier this season set the record for the youngest ever starting lineup with an average age of 21.0 years in a 4-2 defeat to Southampton.

Utilising young players will  be no big deal for Solskjaer,

who equalled Sir Matt Busby’s record of giving eight Manchester United players their first team debuts during the 19/20 season,

which shows how willing he is to give youth a chance when he is in charge.

The Mackems have previously had success loaning players from the Red Devils,

with Amad Diallo enjoying a successful season in the north-east the previous season,

and Palmer believes that relationship may be restored if the Norwegian takes the post.

“I believe Solskjaer would be a wonderful fit for them,

and his connections to Manchester United would help them bring young players to the club on loan.

“Tony Mowbray was able to get them into the playoffs last season,

so with the right balance between young players and senior players they could do really well.”
