Newcastle United’s owners may add “rocket boosters” to their transfer budget if the Premier League approves a new luxury tax.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively with Football Insider about

the impact new laws will have at St James’ Park.

According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League is considering scrapping point deductions in favour of a luxury tax.

Under the new approach, top-tier clubs could choose to spend over their budgets at

the expense of a tax that would be distributed to other clubs in the division.

Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian owners, PiF, are thought to have a valuation of more than £600 billion and

would be free to spend far beyond current PSR constraints if rules were introduced.

Newcastle United potentially unleash Saudi wealth under new Premier League rules.

Maguire stated that it is “harsh” that Newcastle are not permitted to spend as much as Chelsea and Manchester City after their takeovers,

and that the luxury tax would be welcomed on Tyneside.

“One of the complaints coming from Newcastle fans is that Chelsea were allowed to spend as much money as

they wanted under Roman Abramovich when he first arrived,” Maguire told Football Insider.

“The same was true for Sheikh Mansour and Manchester City.

“It appears cruel that Newcastle is being penalised for being in the same circumstance but at the wrong time as the other two clubs.

“So, the new luxury tax idea would allow Newcastle’s owners to include rocket boosters in their budget.

“A lot would depend upon whether they felt that the rate of tax is worth paying – and that is the crux of the issue for me.”
