Patrick Mahomes is following in Tom Brady’s footsteps with his latest contract decision.

The Kansas City Chiefs stated on Tuesday that they had agreed to alter Mahomes’ contract in order to win three consecutive games in the 2024 NFL season.

This shift will free up an additional $21.6 million (£16.88 million) in salary-cap space,

allowing the Chiefs to spend more money as they strive to become the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row.

The Chiefs are going all out to make history by keeping Chris Jones on a five-year,

$158.8 million (£135.6 million) deal with $60 million (£46.90 million) guaranteed at signing, as well as Drue Tranquill.

Despite being in the middle of a 10-year, $450 million (£351 million) contract,

Mahomes is doing his part to assist the Chiefs add players who will make their historic challenge easier.

Mahomes’ choice to modify his contract to aid Kansas City is similar to what Brady did with the New England Patriots.

Throughout his 20-year career with the Patriots,

Brady frequently accepted lower pay with each deal to allow New England to constantly develop a good squad around him. For example,

Sports Illustrated calculated that Brady earned $241 million (£188.4 million) between 2004 and 2019,

which equates to almost $15 million (£11.73 million) annually.

When Tom Brady’s earnings are compared to those of other great quarterbacks such as Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers,

it is evident that the seven-time Super Bowl champion makes less money each year.

Stafford earned $188 million (£147 million) between 2013 and 2020,

which equates to approximately $23.5 million (£18.4 million) per year.

Rodgers, on the other side, made far more than Stafford. Between 2009 and 22,

he earned just under $300 million (£235 million). But his annual earnings were little lower than Stafford’s, at $21 million (£16.4 million).

Brady earned less than Stafford or Rodgers, but his on-field success compensated for it.

During his 20-year career with the Patriots, Brady won six Super Bowls,

was voted Super Bowl MVP four times, and was a three-time regular season MVP, among other honors.

After joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brady earned nearly $100 million (£78 million) over three seasons.

Despite the significant compensation increase,

Brady led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl triumph in 2021, defeating Mahomes and the Chiefs.

After winning Super Bowl LVIII, Mahomes expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to make the Chiefs the next big thing in the NFL.

He was quoted as saying: “And then I’m gonna do whatever I can to be back in this game next year and try to go for that three-peat.”

He went on to say, “So, it’s an ongoing thing in the NFL,

and I think Tom [Brady] put it best: once you win the championship and have those parades and rings, you’re no longer the champion.”

“You have to come back with that same mentality, and I learnt from individuals like that,

who have been the greatest of all time at the highest level, and that is my approach.

I’m going to celebrate with my teammates for what we’ve accomplished, but then we’re going to work hard to return to this game next year.”
