According to sources, Newcastle United plans to startle the Premier League by signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this summer.

Following Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman’s ACL injuries, the Magpies have made centre-back their first priority. The latter, in particular, is a huge blow to Newcastle, as he remains the club’s best defender.

Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are Newcastle’s only first-team alternatives, the same centre-back duo that helped the club avoid relegation. The Magpies needed to bolster their backline before the latest injury setbacks, and losing two defenders in rapid succession has just exacerbated that situation.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle chiefs are considering spending big money to recruit Guehi from Palace.

A former Chelsea academy product, the 23-year-old has developed as one of England’s most promising defenders in recent years.

Ironically, Guehi has missed the last seven games due to a knee ailment but is expected to return later this month.

The Eagles player has a good chance of flying with England to Euro 2024.

While still a young player, Guehi is only five games away from reaching 100 Premier League appearances.

However, Palace is aware of his worth and will most likely demand an exorbitant cost.

Newcastle are also aware that the Three Lions player has two years left on his deal.

If they continue to resist, Palace may be obliged to significantly reduce their demands in the coming year.

Despite being right-footed, Guehi is generally positioned on the left side of Palace’s center-back duo.

This qualifies him to replace Botman while he recovers from a long-term ailment, before finally teaming the Dutchman.
