Hjulmand, a 24-year-old defensive midfielder, has shined in Portugal since replacing Joao Palhinha.

He formerly captained former club Lecce, has five caps for Denmark, and has four goals and four assists this season,

including a goal in midweek when Toon scouts were thought to be in attendance.

Diomande’s name has been connected with a prospective move to St James’ Park for several months.

The highly-rated 20-year-old appears to be one of the right-sided centre-backs being considered as a long-term successor for Fabian Schar,

with the Ivory Coast star praised for his pace, athleticism, air domination, and ball confidence.

He has a £70 million release clause in his current deal, although current Transfermarkt valuations place him at roughly €40 million. Manchester United is also reportedly interested in Hjulmand, while Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with Diomande.
