While anything may happen on the pitch in what is expected to be one of the greatest Championship promotion battles in history,

Ipswich Town are apparently looking to complete some business away from the excitement.

Ipswich transfer news

As things stand, Ipswich are top of the Championship and on track to secure unprecedented back-to-back promotions to the Premier League in style, but only two points separate them from third-place Leicester City, who have a game in hand.

Kieran McKenna’s side, who are on the verge of a Championship season to remember, are unlikely to take it easy in the remaining six games, as we saw last time out against Southampton.

With an East Anglian derby against Norwich City on the horizon, Ipswich have shifted their attention to the summer transfer market, as they prepare to make their Premier League ambition a reality.

According to Mike McGrath and John Percy of The Telegraph, Ipswich are now looking to recruit Seny Dieng from Middlesbrough,

along with Newcastle United and Crystal Palace. Boro are apparently looking for a deal worth double the £2 million amount they paid to buy the goalkeeper from Queens Park Rangers last year.

After an excellent season in the Championship, the Senegal international appears to have a decision to make this summer.

As for Ipswich, there are few better ways to make a name for themselves in the Premier League than to beat Newcastle to a significant acquisition this summer.

The shot-stopper is definitely worth keeping an eye on in the coming window.

“Weapon” Dieng can compete with Hladky.

While Dieng’s position as Middlesbrough’s number one has been called into doubt at times,

he has subsequently reclaimed his spot under Michael Carrick, cementing his place in the team once more. In doing so,

he piqued the curiosity of Ipswich, who now have the opportunity to sign a perfect competitor for Vaclav Hladky.

League Stats 23/24 (via FBref) Seny Dieng Vaclav Hladky
Save Percentage 65.4% 66%
Clean sheets 9 13
Pass Completion Rate 79.3% 85.3%
Saves 68 99

Given Carrick’s admiration for Dieng, the transaction could be difficult to negotiate.

When asked about his goalie earlier this season, the Boro manager told The Northern Echo: “For us,

it’s an extra kind of attacking weapon, and having a keeper like Seny is an extra kind of string to your bow.”

It’s an extra player on the field who can play with the ball and feels comfortable doing so.

“It provides you an extra player in possession, which is something we believe in and enjoy utilizing.

It’s not play at all costs, but it’s definitely our inclination, and Seny fits in so nicely with that.”
