Defoe, who enjoyed a prolific spell with Sunderland as a player, scoring 20 goals in 87 appearances, has long harbored ambitions of managing the club. He emphasized his readiness to embrace the challenge, stating, “If I got an opportunity, I wouldn’t shy away from it, so let’s go.”

Having turned down lucrative offers in broadcasting to pursue coaching, Defoe is determined to maintain his “obsession” with the game. He has assembled a backroom team led by his trusted assistant Paul Bracewell, alongside two younger coaches.

Reflecting on his coaching journey, Defoe drew inspiration from conversations with top managers like Antonio Conte and Gareth Southgate, emphasizing the importance of surrounding oneself with experienced mentors. He stressed the need for dedication and a deep understanding of the game, urging young players to maintain their passion.

Addressing the underrepresentation of black managers in football, Defoe acknowledged the challenges but remained resolute in his pursuit of a managerial career. “It’s hard. It always has been,” he remarked, citing statistics that reveal the scarcity of black managers in the sport.

In his appeal to Sunderland’s Director of Football, Kristjaan Speakman, Defoe highlighted his extensive experience working with young players, underlining his ability to adapt and coach effectively.

With an illustrious playing career spanning over two decades and coaching stints at top clubs like Tottenham and Rangers, Defoe is poised to make a seamless transition into management. His unwavering love for the game and dedication to coaching set him apart as a promising candidate for the Sunderland hot seat.
