According to insiders, Manchester United are “wobbling” over recruiting sporting director Dan Ashworth due to worries over his role in the Sandro Tonali saga.

The Red Devils and Newcastle have failed to strike an agreement on compensation since Ashworth resigned and was placed on gardening leave in February after accepting United’s offer.

Ashworth has accepted terms with the 20-time league champions,

but Newcastle are demanding between £15 and £20 million in compensation for the transfer expert.

However, United are said to be “very concerned” by his handling of the Magpies’ signing of Tonali last summer (2023).

Alarm bells are ringing at Old Trafford after Newcastle paid £60 million to buy Tonali from AC Milan,

but he was soon banned for 10 months for betting rule violations after being charged by the Italian FA.

The Italian international was recently charged by the English FA, which could sanction the midfielder for a longer period.

Ashworth effectively signed the agreement after failing to conduct due diligence,

and as a result, fans of the Tyneside club have harshly criticized him.

Man United have new Ashworth concerns: they are ‘wobbling’ on the appointment.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle is looking into how the club’s recruitment team failed to detect Tonali’s gambling addiction before finalizing the transfer.

Ashworth and his company were under fire for making what the Magpies’ enraged owners,

the Saudi-based Public Investment Fund, saw as both an avoidable and poor mistake.

Following his minority ownership, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS outfit made the transfer window their primary priority as they sought to overhaul the club’s recruitment team.

In addition to Tonali, Ashworth oversaw the arrivals of top performers Alexander Isak and Sven Botman at St James’ Park.

It has been widely speculated that Manchester United are close to signing Southampton sporting director Jason Wilcox.

United are sixth in the Premier League rankings, and Ratcliffe has failed to have an impact on the team during the summer window.
