Rangers are in a stronger situation than they have been in for some time under Philippe Clement’s leadership,

but a minor makeover is still required this summer.

Six players in the squad are out of contract, all of whom have played important roles for the club at some point in the past,

and it appears that decisions have been made on the majority of them.

Rangers appeared to take a new route in January with their acquisitions, and Philippe Clement appears to be clearing the decks at Ibrox.

Did Philippe Clement make Rangers contract decisions?

Fabio Silva, Mohamed Diomande, and Oscar Cortes all immediately improved their technical skills.

They are athletic and mobile, with the ability to progress as players.

In contrast, out-of-contract players are at the opposite end of their careers and have question marks over their heads.

Speaking on Heart and Hand’s Daily Update for Tuesday, April 2nd,

David Edgar hinted that only one of the six players whose contracts are about to expire would be renewed.

Borna Barisic, Leon Balogun, Ryan Jack, Kemar Roofe, Jon McLaughlin, and John Lundstram all share a similar profile.

Barisic is rumored to be on his way to Turkey, Balogun will be 36 when the next season starts,

Jack and Roofe can’t keep healthy, and McLaughlin isn’t even making the bench anymore  despite his previous status as number one.

Out of the six, it is Lundstram who Edgar claims is the most likely to stay and actively involved in negotiations over a new deal.

Rangers headed in a new direction under Clement.

Shortly after joining the club, Philippe Clement acknowledged his surprise at Rangers’ current situation:

“You want to bring in transfers who can make an effect now while also having an influence on the pitch in the coming years and selling them for more money.

“If you go back over the last few years, that is something the club has overlooked.

You want to have youthful prospects who can develop and advance to a higher level than Glasgow Rangers.

There is a balance. You need to have players under contract.

For example, having five players out of contract this season is a ridiculous situation because it wastes money.

“They are of no value any more if the contract is ended.”

The January timeframe appears to indicate that a new direction is being adopted.

Yes, Cortes and Diomande are both on loan, but it would be surprising if their option to buy provisions are not exercised.

The manager is also correct; we need a younger, more dynamic squad, and we need to avoid keeping players for too long.

Especially those who are unable to stay active or who earn high wages but do not contribute.
