The captain must race against time to be ready for the Premiership matchup at the top.

Worried Callum McGregor, the captain of Celtics, has received advice from Chris Sutton not to play against Rangers if he is “half-fit”.

After missing the last four games due to injury, manager Brendan Rodgers said his captain has a “very good chance” of being fit for the crucial derby. John Kennedy said the Celtic midfielder is expected to return to training this week before the team travels to Glasgow. Kennedy was hoping for another lift for the Parkhead dressing room ahead of the pivotal match in the Scottish Premiership title contest, with Reo Hatate also expected to return.

Sutton, though, has suggested playing it more cautiously since, should they win all three games, one of the Old Firm teams will move closer to winning the trophies in May. He says Rodgers shouldn’t even think about signing McGregor if he isn’t playing at his best.

“It’s a case of how fit Callum McGregor is,” he stated to Sky Sports. How much work he puts in this week is crucial since it won’t be the same as training if he has been riding a bike at a gym for five or six weeks.

“Brendan Rodgers will have a decision to make and Celtic are a better team with McGregor in it. But if he’s not fit, or even half-fit, then he can’t play.

“But it’s a big boost for Celtic having Reo Hatate back with him coming through against Livingston, plus Cameron Carter-Vickers too.”
