In an offseason that has seen a somewhat lackluster market for players overall,

the Kansas City Chiefs have continued to re-sign a number of their own free agents. Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a running back, is the most recent player returning for another season.

Re-signing with the Chiefs on a one-year contract that extends his contract for a fifth season, as per reports, was made by Edwards-Helaire on Tuesday afternoon. This is an intriguing decision given that the Chiefs did not activate his fifth-year option last season.

According to sources, Clyde Edwards-Helaire has returned to the Chiefs for a sixth season.
Given Edwards-Helaire’s track record of production over the previous four years, any deal for him is anticipated to be cheap, even though the specifics were not disclosed at the time of publication.

Former first-round pick Edwards-Helaire was acquired by the Chiefs in the 2020 NFL Draft. Edwards-Helaire never lived up to the draft hype of being the first player selected overall at his position and the organization’s sole first-round prospect since Patrick Mahomes was selected in 2017. He remained with the team for the duration of his rookie contract, though.

As a perfect change-of-scenes signing, Edwards-Helaire was thought to be able to find a new home in free agency, but that was obviously not the case in a market that was overflowing with household names at the position—from Josh Jacobs to Derrick Henry to Tony Pollard to Saquon Barkley.

Edwards-Helaire led the Chiefs in rushing yards last season with 70 runs for 223 yards and one score.
