Concerned Chris Sutton has urged Celtic captain Callum McGregor not to play against Rangers if he is “half-fit”.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has disclosed that his captain has a “very good chance” of being ready for the derby after missing the previous four games due to injury, while John Kennedy has indicated that the Celtic midfielder will return to training this week ahead of the team’s trip across Glasgow. With Reo Hatate also returning, Kennedy hoped for additional boost in the Parkhead dressing room before the critical Scottish Premiership title clash.

However, Sutton has suggested a more cautious approach, with one of the Old Firm sides ready to take a significant step towards hoisting the silverware in May if they can claim all three points. He insists Rodgers shouldn’t even consider McGregor if he is not up to full speed.

He told Sky Sports: “It comes down to Callum McGregor’s fitness level. If he’s been sitting on a bike in a gym for five or six weeks, it’s not the same as training, so how much he does this week is critical.

“Brendan Rodgers will have to make a decision, and Celtic are a superior club with McGregor on the roster. However, if he is not fit, or even half-fit, he will be unable to play.

“But it’s a big boost for Celtic having Reo Hatate back with him coming through against Livingston, plus Cameron Carter-Vickers too.”
