Ross Stewart was signed by Sunderland for £300,000 in 2021, and in 2023, they struck gold when they sold him for

310 million.

Over the years, Sunderland has seen a number of players come and go; some supporters will always love them,

while others will be relieved that they are no longer with the team.

Although it’s unclear how former striker Ross Stewart falls into that description,

the Black Cats struck gold when they signed the Ross County native.

Sunderland looked for a new striker during the January 2021 transfer window in an effort to bolster their push for

promotion from League One.

Then, just at the end of that month, word leaked out that Sunderland had signed Ross Stewart,

a striker from Ross County.

In what was reportedly a £300,000 transaction for the Wearsiders,

he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract upon joining.

Stewart, a forward who joined the Scottish team in 2018, played a significant role in helping the team win both the

Scottish Championship and the Scottish Challenge Cup.

After that, the Scotsman played for Ross County for a season and a half in the Scottish Premiership, making 40 appearances and scoring nine goals.

Despite the forward’s lackluster play for Ross County, his efforts appeared to have garnered notice and impressed Sunderland enough that they signed him.

It goes without saying that there would have been a lot of doubt regarding Ross Stewart’s ability to succeed in English football when Sunderland announced his signing.

Stewart needed some time to get used to his new team for the remainder of the 2020–21 season with the Black Cats. He only scored two goals in 11 League One games, but he added another during the play-offs.

While it is understandable that Sunderland was sad not to advance to the Championship that season, it actually afforded Stewart more time to adjust to life in the Football League, and he had a fantastic 2021–2022 season.

The Scottish international’s performance was outstanding and essential to the team winning the Championship. In 46 League One games, Stewart scored 24 goals and provided five assists.

That season, the forward scored 0.5 goals per game, or one every 167 minutes of play, according to Sofascore.com.

With an average of 2.8 shots per game, at least 1.2 of them going on target, Stewart was shooting lights out in front of goal.

According to Sofascore.com, the forward did waste a whopping twenty-three great opportunities, but he also generated nine opportunities for his teammates and had a goal conversion rate of 19%.
