News Update: Aston Villa are keen in signing €5.9M sunderland defender.

According to reports via our colleagues at BelfastLive, Burnley was interested in a January transfer, but a move never happened.

Aston Villa is reportedly interested in Sunderland defender Trai Hume.

The 21-year-old has impressed for club and country, having played in over 40 games for the Black Cats this season and earning 10 caps for Northern Ireland since making his international debut in 2022.

Furthermore, according to the Belfast Telegraph, Villa is a fan of Hume, but Bournemouth, a Premier League team, is a rival for Villa’s services.

In addition, it’s reported that Serie A winners Napoli and Championship teams Leeds United and Leicester City are also interested.

Hume has demonstrated his versatility as a back-line player by playing for Sunderland this season at both right and left back. Towards the close of the previous season, he also filled in at center half.

Hume was acquired by Sunderland for about £200,000 back in 2022, and the defender may see a boost in value this summer.

The full-back was part of an odd event in February that went viral on social media when Michael Beale,

the Sunderland manager at the time, seemed to ignore Hume when he was replaced. Later on, Beale explained the incident by saying that the Northern Irishman was not something he saw.

The only senior right back for Villa right now is Matty Cash, though Hume would probably compete with him if he signs.

In lieu of the injured Cash, the Villans were forced to play Ezri Konsa out of position on Saturday.
