Borna Barisic’s planned Rangers transfer to Trabzonspor has been halted, according to Sporx in Turkey.

The outlet reported on its website on March 30 that the delay is due to a lowering in the Turkish Super Lig’s international player regulation.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) declared in January that the maximum number of players registered in squads

will be reduced from 14 to 12 beginning next season,

but there will be no restrictions on starting lineups [A News, 11 January].

According to Sporx, Trabzonspor will complete the season with 13 foreign players after factoring in those returning from loan,

causing a setback to Barisic’s agreement.

However, as a result of an active recruitment push, around half of that number is now expected to leave to make way for newcomers.

Is Ibrox defender about to leave the Rangers?

If the TFF’s intention was publicized in January, it will not have surprised Trabzonspor at this point,

therefore it is unlikely to completely derail Barisic’s relocation.

Unless their squad planning is very shortsighted, the Turkish Super Lig side would have considered

this into their calculations before embarking on a quest for new players this summer.

Barisic appears to be at the top of their list, so if there is room for anyone, it will most likely be him.

And given signs from elsewhere in Turkey that the deal has already been reached,

this may simply entail a longer wait until it is officially revealed.

Rangers In any case, it would be surprising if the 31-year-old left-back stayed at Rangers once his contract expired in the summer,

so the administrative complexity is unlikely to change anything on the Govan end.

He began the 3-1 victory over Hibs (30 March) in the injury absence of Ridvan Yilmaz,

but with the Turk perhaps returning for the visit of Celtic next week (7 April), Barisic will be back on the bench once the 22-year-old is fit.
