Cowboys free agent: Micah Parsons reveals 3 reasons why Dallas should re-sign key star player.

The Dallas Cowboys have approached free agency this season in the same manner as always—letting the initial waves of players go unclaimed and choosing not to pursue the more sought-after and expensive possibilities available. Rather, the Cowboys have kept a number of its players on small contracts by utilizing free agency. Dallas won’t feel pressure to take a RB early

The Cowboys’ roster needs work in a few areas before the draft later this month. But in the past month, running back has become more of a focal point after Tony Pollard was not re-signed. Analysts are naturally drawing conclusions and speculating that the Cowboys may be interested in a running back prospect in the second or third round of the draft. It’s only that the Cowboys presently have seven draft picks, and only three of those are in the top 100.

In the first three rounds, selecting a running back would deduct one pick from available positions at tackle, center, or linebacker. The addition of Elliott gives the Cowboys a solid running back by committee to go along with Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle. If someone falls like Isaac Guerendo or Kendall Milton, the Cowboys still have the option to select a late-round pick.

Pass protection

Elliott is an excellent pass protector, which may be overblown, but it’s one of the reasons the Cowboys selected him with the fourth overall choice in 2016 because they saw him as a complete player. Deuce Vaughn can run a change of pace and probably be used as a third-down option, but he isn’t built to block players who are much bigger than him. It’s dangerous to give your franchise’s most precious asset—its quarterback—to a young, inexperienced player to pass block a free rusher.

Also keep in mind that without Tyron Smith and Tyler Bidasz, the Cowboys’ offensive line will appear different this season. The early choice to succeed Biadasz at center is Brock Hoffman, but what about left tackle? Should the Cowboys put their faith in a rookie left tackle and running back to learn how to cover the quarterback’s blindside? It’s as easy as re-signing Elliott and putting him in a position where he will thrive.

Short yardage/goal line runner
