Chris Sutton has expressed his concerns about Todd Cantwell, claiming the Rangers midfielder is overly focused on himself.

The former Norwich City player has been a standout at Ibrox since his arrival, but he was caught off guard by his manager, Philippe Clement, in the Europa League last week.

Cantwell was replaced after only 30 minutes of play against Aris Limassol by Ross McCausland.

Clement later stated the adjustment was tactical, expressing his dissatisfaction with Cantwell’s performance.

Sutton, who has previously argued with the former Norwich City player on social media, recognises Cantwell’s abilities, but believes the Englishman is holding himself back in a variety of ways.

He told Sky Sports: “I believe his best position is as a No.10 or playing narrow.”

“He is not a winger who will stand on the touchline and drive at players; he is a smart footballer. That’s what he is.

“He hasn’t been consistent enough throughout the years. The friendship with Philippe Clement is interesting.

“He’s just like any other guy on the team. He is not different; at times, I believe he prioritizes his own image over the team’s.

“That is something that must change. He is 25  years old, you see some of his passes there, he is a really clever footballer.

“For his career to take off, he needs to demonstrate greater consistency, and if he can, Rangers will be on to a winner with him.

“But at this moment in time, you don’t know what you are going to get with him.”
