Rangers have a key match against the defending champions coming up, and although Celtic leads the title race at the

moment, just one point separates the two competitors. With the summer transfer window fast approaching, let’s take

a look at some of the most recent news in Glasgow as we get ready for another exciting weekend.

Celtic and Rangers target to become free agent

Gijs Smal of FC Twente is well into the last 12 months of his current contracts, and during the January transfer

window, both Celtic and Rangers were connected with a move for him. Both Glasgow teams were exploring moves

for the left-back, but in the end, the Eredivisie club decided to hang onto him instead

of trying to make a quick money.

Gijs will therefore finish out his contract and become a free agent in the summer, making himself available to any

team that wants to pursue a transfer. To announce that the 26-year-old will be departing the club along with other

staff members, Twente issued a statement.

“The contracts of Gijs Smal, Joshua Brenet, and Ricky van Wolfwinkel are about to expire. Gijs Smal has made it

clear that he has no intention of staying with FC Twente past the end of the current campaign.

Pundit raises concerns over Celtic negotiations

According to Frank McAvennie, Celtic is ‘negotiating’ Paulo Bernardo’s £6 million release clause in order to

potentially recruit him permanently from Benfica. The former star player for the Hornets has emphasized that,

although he would be happy to sign the 22-year-old for a “fair price,”

he doesn’t think Bernardo will play enough to justify the transfer.

Will he be a consistent player? My greatest issue is that,” McAvennie said to Football Insider. “Reo Hatate will easily

return to the club, and Iwata, who I admire, will play for the balance of the season.

“To see if the player plays, Brendan and the player themselves must decide. With Callum McGregor and O’Riley,

Bernardo is replaced by four players. Would supporters choose Bernardo over those three? Not in my opinion.”
