When James Tavernier inevitably departs Rangers, it will be nearly impossible to replace him, but whoever the manager is will have to figure out how.

With an astonishing 21 goals and 10 assists this season,

it’s no surprise that Gers manager Philippe Clement isn’t concerned about where his team’s goals are coming from.

The skipper turns 33 early next season, and there will come a time when James Tavernier is no longer Rangers’ first choice; fortunately, a replacement has already been selected.

James Tavernier’s replacement is waiting in the wings for Rangers

Adam Devine is at a crossroads in his career; he doesn’t appear to have the same potential as the likes of Alan Hutton,

yet there is no reason why he couldn’t be a long-term back-up option.

It is nearly impossible to find a player who can match Tavernier’s style,

but finding someone who can check as many boxes as possible is the next best choice.

Modern defenders must be quick, strong, and skilled in the air and with the ball at their feet, ideally capable of doing both.

Full-backs, in particular, require an engine capable of propelling them around the pitch for 90 minutes.

In the versatile Dujon Sterling, Alex Neil believes that Rangers already have the natural heir:

“Dujon’s biggest challenge will be competing with Tavernier for the right-back position at Ibrox,

given how many goals the captain contributes to their team.”

“If Tavernier isn’t the right back, I believe Dujon would be an excellent fit. There is no dispute about that.

The difficulty is that Tav is the captain, thus he has an influence in the changing room.

“He has all the qualities you’d want. Dujon handled with any opposition player who we suspected of causing us problems.

This is how we felt about him.

“He could just eliminate dangers since you can’t get away from him.

He’s the type of defender you have to defeat twice or three times before getting past him. He was exceptional.

“One v one against any opponent last year, he came out on the right side of it.”

Why Dujon Sterling Could Be Tavernier’s Natural Heir

What should be recalled about Dujon Sterling is that he has been really impressive for Rangers in recent months,

particularly while playing out of position.

You’ll be lucky if the 24-year-old has played one or two games at right back;

instead, he’s spent the majority of his time at left back, defensive midfield, left wing, right flank, and even number 10.

Neil makes an excellent point.

Sterling will never be James Tavernier, but what the former Chelsea academy graduate brings is just as valuable.

We also saw recently, prior to his injury, that he can contribute in the final third and cause issues for other teams.

He possesses all of the fundamentals required to be a successful footballer – not that he isn’t already –

and it won’t be long before James Tavernier has to worry for his spot in the Rangers squad.
