The Scotland international break is now over, and Celtic supporters can now focus on Sunday’s return to domestic play.

Due to his recent injury, it is unlikely that Celtic captain Callum McGregor will play in the challenging away match against Livingston.

Despite what Tam McManus wrote about him, the vital midfield player is still a key component of Steve Clarke’s plans even though he missed Scotland’s friendlies against the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

The former Hibs player stated that McGregor might have trouble returning to the Scotland starting lineup following the trio’s impressive performance against the Netherlands in midfield under Clarke, which included Billy Gilmour, Scott McTominay, and John McGinn.

Peter Martin, a fellow pundit, has vehemently denied the assertion.

Martin: McGregor is the best midfielder in Scotland

The PLZ Soccer presenter was not amused by McManus’ assertion that McGregor is essential to Steve Clarke’s preferred style of play for his Scotland squad.

“I’m going to be brutally honest with you, I mean over the last three, four years, Callum McGregor is the best midfielder in Scotland,” Martin stated [PLZ Soccer].

“I don’t see him giving up on the game.” In my opinion, he is the cornerstone of Scotland’s style of play under Steve Clark.

There is no doubt in my mind that McGregor joins the Scotland team as soon as he is fit. Being a big supporter of the Celtic captain, Clarke has openly commended the midfield player for his previous national team work.

Scotland will need McGregor in that lineup if they are to advance out of their group in the Euros, as he allows players like John McGinn and McTominay the flexibility to back the lone striker whenever he is on the field.

McGregor has repeatedly shown that he is not only the inspiration behind Celtic, but also a major factor in the current success of his nation.
