When they let the gifted young player depart for free, the Light Blues had a howler.

Bologna, Lewis Ferguson, Series A wolves

Several players have made a claim for a spot in the first squad at Glasgow Rangers after making an impression in the academy during the 2023–24 season.

As a reward for their outstanding B team performance, Zak Lovelace, Cole McKinnon, and Ross McCausland have all participated with the senior squad to varied degrees.

Hopefully, they will have prosperous first-team careers, but Lewis Ferguson, a Scotland international, was one player who was denied the opportunity to achieve precisely that.

The Gers legend Barry Ferguson’s nephew, a central midfielder, was cut loose by the team when he was just a youngster, missing out on his senior debut. Since then, he has developed into an outstanding talent who is being pursued by several major European teams.

Lewis Ferguson’s career in Scotland

The adolescent wizard signed with Hamilton after being released by the Light Blues, and after going through the academy system, he went on to accumulate five assists in 14 games with the first squad.

In order to increase their alternatives in the middle of the park, Aberdeen then moved quickly to sign the midfield standout, who former Hamilton owner Ronnie MacDonald hailed as a “diamond” in the summer of 2018.

In 169 games in all competitions for the Dons, he ultimately finished his career with 37 goals and 23 assists for the Scottish team.

Ferguson’s ability to score goals in midfield and compete physically in physical duels drew the attention of Aberdeen during his final Scottish Premiership season, as the table above illustrates.

Rangers may have already been regretting their choice to remove him from their academy by the summer of 2022, when his remarkable form led Serie A side Bologna to sign him for a rumored fee of £3 million.

European interest in Lewis Ferguson

The aggressive midfielder, who scored seven league goals for Bologna last season, is now flourishing in Italy and has drawn interest from several major European teams. The Gers made a huge mistake by signing him.

Sky Sports said earlier this month that the reigning champions Napoli and Serie A powerhouse Juventus, who have players like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen in their lineup, are interested in making a summer move to sign the Scotland international at the end of current season.

The National further assert that Rangers lost out on a substantial financial gain because his current club values him at an astounding £22 million, which is far more than the £3 million they paid Aberdeen for his services.

In his 28 Serie A games so far this season for Bologna, Ferguson has scored six goals, assisted four others, and completed 88% of his passes attempted.

With plenty of time to grow and develop, the 24-year-old wizard has already shown that he is a capable goal scorer and creator from midfield in a top European league. He has also established himself in the Premiership with Aberdeen.

As a result, Rangers made a mistake by releasing the Scottish sensation, missing out on a terrific player who has shown enough to pique the curiosity of European powerhouses like Juventus and Napoli.
