Celtic open talks over Liam Scales deal after he’s branded ‘dreadful’ – sources

Hoops are in negotiations with defender Liam Scales about a new contract, Football Insider has learned.

The 25-year-old’s current contract is slated to expire in June 2025, after joining from Shamrock Rovers in 2021.

Negotiations are ongoing, although it is unlikely that a final agreement will be reached at this time.

Despite Maik Nawrocki’s arrival in the summer, Scales has been an important part of Brendan Rodgers’ 2023-24 squad.

This season, the Republic of Ireland international has started 27 Scottish Premiership games and made 36 appearances in total, scoring one goal and assisting three times.

He is now out of play with a training injury and missed the 3-1 victory over St Johnstone on March 16th,

allowing Stephen Welsh to come back into the side.

Celtic is negotiating with Scales following ‘dreadful’ criticism.

Despite the club’s beginning contract discussions with Scales, not everyone has been impressed with his performances under Rodgers.

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie spoke exclusively to Football Insider last month (23 February) about the defender’s “dreadful” performances and demanded Nawrocki replace him in the team.

The 25-year-old is in his first season of regular first-team football for the Glasgow giants, having spent last season on loan at Aberdeen.

Scales, who cost a reputed £500,000 in 2021, has already made 59 appearances in Scotland’s top level after acquiring valuable senior experience in the League of Ireland.

Celtic face Livingston on Sunday (March 31).

After one more game, the Hoops lead the Rangers by one point in the title battle.
