Breaking News: Rangers star agreed terms to sign two years contract with Man Utd
After graduating from the renowned academy set-up at the peak of the club in the 1990s, Wes Brown, a former
Manchester United defender, saw a star from Rangers come through at the Old Trafford giants and hopes he can
reach his potential playing for the Gers. Brown played 362 times under former Rangers forward Sir Alex Ferguson at
United between 1996 and 2011.
After winning two Champions League titles and five Premier League titles with United, the former central defender
(who could also play right back) moved to Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers, and Kerala Blasters.
While making his way up to the first squad, Brown had the opportunity to train with veteran players like Eric
Cantona and David Beckham at United’s former training facility, The Cliff.
In the twenty-first century, a young midfielder for Rangers was advancing through the ranks at United, participating
for the U17, U18, and reserve teams.
Between 2012 and 2014, he would eventually struggle to get into games for the United reserves, but interim manager
Ryan Giggs gave him the opportunity to make his first-team debut for the squad.
Tom Lawrence was the young man in question, and Brown—as reported in The Rangers Review—was questioned
about the Welshman’s tenure at United as well as his reflections on how his career
has progressed since leaving his childhood team.
The former England player discussed how Lawrence’s talent allowed him to have a successful career even if he was
unable to leave his imprint in the Man United senior side.
Brown said this can be linked with how the likes of Phil Bardsley and Kieran Richardson came through at United but
again, wouldn’t have too much of a lasting impact at Old Trafford.
However, they still had the talent to play at a high level and Brown is encouraged with Lawrence’s move to Rangers
where he is playing Europa League football and challenging for trophies regularly.
Wes Brown on ‘exciting’ Tom Lawrence
Brown recalled: “Tom was in the youth team.” Brown has been promoting United’s friendly match against Rangers
this summer. I observed him during their matches.
“Playing with really good players at the time made it worthwhile to go through the youth team.”
“A significant number of young people have passed through. However, they haven’t always succeeded at Manchester
United. The first team’s strength was the issue.
Danny Welbeck, Jonathan Greening, Kieran Richardson, and Phil Bardsley all had
successful stints as Manchester United players.
