The battle for banner number eighteen is under way, with the Lakers and Celtics tied for the most NBA titles with 17. Which team, then, has a better chance of becoming the most successful in NBA history?

Paul Pierce, a legend of the Boston Celtics, made his prediction on a recent broadcast of FS1’s “Undisputed,” casting doubt on the veracity of the Lakers’ previous championship run in the Orlando bubble.

“I guarantee you guys this: we’ll win our 18th championship before the Lakers,” Pierce stated. “Y’all [Lakers] just caught up a few years ago when you won that Mickey Mouse championship.”

Given that the C’s are currently the clear favorites to win the NBA Finals in June, Pierce makes a reasonable point. The Lakers, on the other hand, have a lot of work ahead of them to make the playoffs the following month and are not even listed among the top-10 title favorites.

It goes without saying that after Pierce’s remarks, Celtics and Lakers supporters went all out on social media. In his “Gil’s Arena” podcast, former All-Star Gilbert Arenas offered his opinion as well.

The Celtics won 13 of their 17 wins before 1977, according to Arenas. “If I’m being petty, 95 percent of the Celtics’ championships came before Paul Pierce was even born,” Arenas remarked.

The Celtics have hoisted banners in 1981, 1984, 1986, and 2008 since Pierce was born in 1977.

The Lakers have won six titles since the beginning of the new millennium and five more in the 1980s within the same period. In case you were keeping track, the Lakers have defeated the Celtics 11 times since 1977.

“They won most of their championships during the 8-team league, dawg,” Arenas said of the Celtics. “In the last 30 years, Boston has been irrelevant in basketball history. In the last 30 years, you have one championship [in 2008].”

Over the following few years, the Celtics have the opportunity to alter the perception of themselves by going on a dynastic run.

Their two superstars, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, are about to hit their prime years, so they have the pieces in place. Tatum celebrated his 26th birthday this month.
