Derek Ferguson believes that VAR should be eliminated to pay for improved facilities after Rangers and Dundee’s League match was called off.

The pundit described the game’s contentious cancellation on Sunday (17 March) as a “crying shame” that made Scottish football look awful as it was scheduled to be shown live on Sky Sports.

Ferguson was present at the ground prior to the game and talked with supporters who had traveled long distances to attend, but when money has not been invested in Dens Park’s pitch, the absence of drainage can only imply one thing.

With video technology for officiating proving so polarizing, he stated that it was one obvious way to free up funds to invest onto pitches.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: We’re talking about VAR, and that money could be better used. It’s evident that it should be spent in Dundee’s park.”

“The groundskeeper has a difficult task trying to get the game started, but the odds are stacked against them. If you don’t have proper drainage and haven’t spent any money on the surface in years, there will only be one consequence.

“It’s a shame because people look at Scottish football, which is supposed to be on Sky, and they’re probably scratching their heads as to why it’s not, so it doesn’t look good for Scottish football.”

“I can tell money is tight up here; you don’t have the funds, but you look for places to get those funds, and VAR is one of them. It is a heartbreaking shame.

“I went up there at the ground, spoke to a lot of supporters who had gone a significantly farther distance than me, so the time, effort, and money that fans spend just for it to be called off a couple of hours before the game, tremendous disappointment, and it just doesn’t look good for the Scottish game.”

Rangers vs Dundee rescheduled following Dens Park dispute.

Philippe Clement was disappointed that the game at Dens Park did not go ahead, having traveled to the venue with his squad in the hopes of rapidly rebounding from defeat against Benfica, but the inconvenience to the club pales in comparison to fans.

The game has been rescheduled for midweek following the Old Firm encounter with Celtic, and it is expected to provide an edge in the title race, with Rangers still considered as favourites despite being a point behind Celtic going into the international break due to their inability to participate.

VAR does not appear to be going away anytime soon, therefore Dundee will need to find another solution to ensure that games are not postponed indefinitely.
