Over his career as an NBA player and coach, Darvin Ham of the Los Angeles Lakers has accumulated a wealth of honors and memories.

In his eight seasons as a player, his greatest accomplishment was leading the Detroit Pistons to the NBA title in 2003–04.

Because they prevailed without a superstar thanks to their strong team defense,

the Pistons were among the most intriguing winners of the modern era.

Even though Ham did not play a lot of minutes for that Pistons club,

it is undeniable that every player on the roster contributed significantly to their championship run given their style of play.

And when the Pistons played the Miami Heat on March 17, a 20-year anniversary ceremony was held to honor that effort.

Members of the 2003-04 championship team were honored and Ham flew out between Lakers games to be in attendance.

When Ham got back, he talked about how motivating it was to revisit the season’s memories and catch up with his old teammates.

Before the game against the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, Ham declared, “It was amazing.”

“I left after the game on Saturday night and arrived around 5:50,

arrived at the hotel and fell asleep right away after a four and a half hour drive,

woke up and went over to the stadium, got to see all my guys, just to get back and to go zigzag across the country in a day.

The winning culture that the franchise is about—well, was about—and eventually they’ll get back to that, hopefully.

That place always holds a special place in my heart,

and just being around my guys—we all stay in touch so it wasn’t like what’s been going on, what’s up with this.

Even after all these years, it still feels like we never missed a beat.

But it really filled my cup to the brim to see what everyone has accomplished in the basketball world since we were all a member of that

unique group in 2004. similar to a recharge.

Everyone is sending me best wishes, sharing their opinions on what they’ve been witnessing,

and, of course, keeping a careful eye on us—especially those men.

All we need is for the assurance that you can keep being you and doing what you do best—we love you and have your back. Everything. Thus, that was precisely what the physician prescribed.

As they prepare for a home stretch that would include winning two Play-In

Tournament games before attempting to upset the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference as a No. 8 seed,

the Lakers need all the energy they can get.

Ham’s accomplishments as a player and coach demonstrate his ability to win basketball,

and this is his chance to demonstrate that ability as the Lakers’ starting signal caller at a crucial juncture.

Darvin Ham received advice from Quin Snyder after being hired by Lakers

Prior to Monday’s game between the Lakers and Atlanta Hawks,

head coach Quin Synder of the Hawks shared with Ham the lesson he taught him during L.A.’s early struggles last season.

“Our dialogue was more along the lines of,

this is the NBA and there’s adversity and you just keep doing what you think is right and you persevere.”

It goes without saying that I believe anyone coaching in this league understands how difficult it can be at times,

and that you occasionally need assistance in order to sort of see the big picture because you can become quite focused on a particular

outcome on a given night or at any given time.
