Cowboys promote Al Harris to assistant head coach but his goal is to run his own team

The Dallas Cowboys promoted defensive backs coach Al Harris to assistant head coach in recognition of his achievements

in turning cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland into NFL leaders in interceptions.

The franchise’s formal announcement of Mike McCarthy’s 2024 coaching staff marked Harris’ official promotion.

After joining the Cowboys as a second-round choice in 2020, Diggs has the most picks in the league (2021), having led the NFL with 13 interceptions.

After an All-Pro season in 2023 in which he established an NFL record with five interceptions returned for touchdowns,

Al has had a huge influence on both our team and coaching staff. In a statement, McCarthy said,

“I’m looking forward to his leadership in this expanded role.” “He is a fantastic mentor and motivator,

and by elevating him to this new level, our entire staff will gain from it.

Al is a remarkable fit for this because of his commitment, ability to work with others, grasp of the game,

and background in creating the special dynamics required to support a championship locker room.

Harris spent eight of his 14 NFL seasons in Green Bay, where he played for five seasons under McCarthy.

2020 saw him travel to Dallas alongside McCarthy.

When Dan Quinn moved for Washington, he was a candidate for the position of defensive coordinator.

Harris, though, has bigger goals. His goal is to work as a head coach. That direction is being pursued by this.

“I am grateful to Coach McCarthy and the Cowboys for giving me the opportunity to support the head coach in our quest for championship victories,” Harris remarked.

“We have a strong and talented group that can accomplish our goals, and I will commit my time, effort,

and knowledge to help this team succeed by offering my assistance wherever I can.” Mike Zimmer, the defensive coordinator,

will be leading five new defensive coaches and one new offensive coach in the 2024 staff.

Jeff Zgonina (defensive line), Christian Garcia (assistant defensive backs/quality control), Paul Guenther (defensive run game coordinator),

Greg Ellis (assistant defensive line/quality control), and Steve Shmiko (offensive assistant quality control) are on the list.
