Discouraging Following West Ham United’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, Henry Winter snaps at VAR.

Henry Winter, a well-known football journalist, attacked VAR following West Ham United’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa yesterday.

Journalist Henry Winter of the Times delivered his assessment on VAR’s decision to nullify West Ham’s potential Premier League championship versus Aston Villa on his official X account.

Winter has spoken his opinion on the matter, following the criticism of talkSPORT analyst Andy Townsend for the decision’s nearly six-minute duration.

Although the Hammers managed to draw with Villa, it appeared as though we had stolen the victory at the conclusion of the match.

After the ball rebounded off Tomas Soucek’s arm and Jarrod Bowen bunched the ball home, the right call was made.

But the thing that infuriated so many was how long it took to make the decision—a point to which Winter has now made reference.
Henry Winter blasts the VAR call in the West Ham vs. Aston Villa game.

Winter was obviously quite upset over last afternoon’s events at the London Stadium.

This morning, a Times correspondent called the VAR officiating “embarrassing” on his official X account:

Winter is absolutely right in this instance. Almost all West Ham supporters will concede that Soucek‘s arm was touched by the ball before Bowen nodded in.

But the fact that it took the referees over six minutes to decide indicates that Jarred Gillett‘s goal awarding error was not “clear and obvious.”

If we want to see VAR used correctly, we need more prominent people like Henry Winter to publicly criticize the technology—or more specifically, the officials behind it.

At the end of the season, hopefully, the powers that be will fix the obvious shortcomings in English officiating so that VAR can be utilized to advance the game rather than impede it.
