Keith Wyness, former Everton chief executive, believes the Premier League will be a “laughing stock” if the Blues or Nottingham Forest are relegated once the season ends.

Everton had previously been docked six points (down from ten after an appeal) for violating the Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) in 2021/22. The Blues, along with Nottingham Forest, are now facing a separate accusation, with any punishment added to their points totals for the season.

Both Everton and Forest are expected to get their decisions by April 8, but if they appeal, the ultimate decision may not come until May 24 – five days after the Premier League’s final fixtures. Sean Dyche’s team are four points ahead of 18th-placed Luton Town, while Nuno’s side are three points away from the Hatters with 10 games left to play.

On Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness stated: “My understanding is this...”I assume the hearings were held both last week and this week. According to the calendar, any appeals must be heard during the final week of the season, or potentially the week after it ends.

“That would be ludicrous. The league will be a laughing stock since relegation could be decided after the season is over.

“We’re running out of time. It was created by the Premier League itself. If all of these appeals are granted, which is entirely possible, it will become even more frustrating.

“There’s also the fact that new rules are coming into place, which clearly shows that the current set of rules are not fit for purpose.”
