Philippe Clement reveals talks with Rangers star after development this week

Although Jack Butland is likely to be disappointed not to be called up for England’s friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, Philippe Clement revealed that he has been in talks with the Rangers custodian after the keeper was left out of the most recent England squad by Gareth Southgate on Thursday, March 14.

Philippe Clement reveals talks with Rangers star after development this week

The Three Lions squad was revealed via X prior to the Gers Europa League match against Benfica on Thursday, with Jordan Pickford, Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale chosen.

According to PLZ Soccer (15 March), the Belgian stated at a press conference after the Benfica match: “It proves that in England they must have a lot of really good goalkeepers if he’s not there.”

“I had a brief conversation with Jack, but he was clearly concentrated on the game, so it wasn’t really necessary.

That is what exists in life. He is still putting in a lot of effort for the Rangers, so more could happen.

The most encouraging thing, in my opinion, is that Jack joining the England squad has been the subject of numerous articles over the past few weeks, and nobody has said, “That’s weird,” to my knowledge.

Given his Rangers performances, does Jack Butland merit a berth for England?

The short answer is yes. Butland has been excellent this season, finally establishing himself after serving as a backup option at Crystal Palace and then going on loan to Manchester United for the second half of last season.

The former Stoke City goalkeeper will be extremely disappointed not to be called up for the first time since 2019, as he has been playing well for Rangers and really making his case to be included.

The 31-year-old has 17 Scottish Premiership clean sheets, which puts him well

Clement is correct, of course, to believe that the three goalkeepers that Southgate called up are quite talented.

Still, it will be a kick in the teeth—especially if the manager follows through on his promise to choose players based on form.

While Johnstone has resumed his starting role at Selhurst Park and Pickford is unquestionably the best player in the national squad, Ramsdale has lost his place in the Arsenal starting lineup to David Raya and hasn’t earned it this year.

This season, the 25-year-old has only made six league starts.

His poor play has earned him criticism on multiple occasions; most recently, he made a critical mistake against Brentford.

Since Butland is a professional, he would never say anything—at least not in public.

However, the choice of goalie is undoubtedly intriguing.
