The injuries to Ross McCausland and Dujon Sterling are a “major concern” for Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton stated that the club’s expanding injury list is a major issue as they approach a key run of fixtures.

Sterling and McCausland were both withdrawn during Rangers’ Scottish Cup quarter-final victory over Hibernian on Sunday (10 March), with Clement confirming that the former will not participate in the second leg of their Benfica encounter.

The injury list at Ibrox does not appear to be affecting the club’s title hopes, but the absence of Abdallah Sima, Oscar Cortes, Danilo, and Todd Cantwell has given Clement fewer alternatives.

Rangers sustain “major” injury blow.

Hutton said that the manager has instilled a “steely mentality” in the team, which has lessened the blow of the limited squad, but he is still anxious ahead of the crucial match.

“It’s not just losing Sterling and McCausland; the injury list is a major concern,” he told Football Insider.

“If the entire squad had been fit, I believe Rangers would be in a great position going into these next games.

“The manager has instilled a pretty steely mentality at this point in time.

“Games like Benfica or Hibs – in prior seasons, they may have crumbled in certain situations.

“That does not appear to be the case, and the Rangers are quite positive about what they are doing.

“But they are unable to control the injuries.

“Rabbi Matondo being back is obviously huge, so hopefully that can ease the burden.”
