BREAKING NEWS: Everton Second Points Deduction Signed at Goodison Park as Hearing Passed.
The Daily Mail reports that Everton will likely receive a second point
deduction at their forthcoming profit and sustainability hearing.
On March 15, the newspaper stated on its website that a repeat
violation of expenditure regulations is “probably” going to result in
another points sanction this season.
For a prior violation, the Toffees were originally docked ten points;
however, this was later lowered to six following Laurence Raboniwitz‘s
appeal.
That had moved Sean Dyche’s team out of the drop zone, but because
of their poor performance on the field, they are now expected to be
lowered even more, and the hearing is scheduled to begin next week.
Can Sean Dyche overcome second Everton sanction to avoid relegation?
It makes sense that the first hearing panel established the precedent
for a violation of the spending restrictions by deducting the first point
even though their original punishment was reversed because of
mistakes in the ruling.
Some may harbor a sliver of hope that the new panel would conclude
that Everton was sufficiently harmed the first time around to warrant
a second sanction in the same season, at least for a period that
coincides with the previous one by two thirds.
However, given the way things have gone at Goodison Park in general
in recent seasons, few will be expecting much in the way of mercy.
At the very least, the “double jeopardy” argument could result in a
punishment reduced by two thirds, making it less than crippling in the
relegation battle; however, Dyche and the players will need to find a
way to improve things on the field after returning from their eventful
training camp in Portugal.
If another points deduction is on the horizon, it will likely be even
more frustrating than the first one because it will occur after the rules
under which it is imposed have already been voted out.
Everton is expected to not only be compliant next season, but also to
have an advantage over some other clubs, under a new system that is
expected to replace the Premier League’s “controversial” laws this
summer. The new system is expected to be more like to UEFA‘s.
