‘Weak’ – Portuguese media slams one Rangers star after loss v Benifca
The Portuguese press heavily criticized Ranger’s midfielder John Lundstram for his performance in midfield as the Light Blues suffered elimination from the Europa League against Benfica.
Philippe Clement‘s team suffered a 1-0 defeat at Ibrox on Thursday (March 14), resulting in a 3-2 aggregate loss to the Portuguese giant. Rafa Silva‘s goal in the second half proved to be the pivotal moment of the match in Glasgow.
While the loss and the manner of their elimination were disappointing for the fans at Ibrox, the Portuguese media didn’t hesitate to criticize Lundstram and his colleagues for their lackluster offensive performance.
According to Portuguese outlet Abola (March 14), Lundstram’s feeble shot late in the second half failed to trouble Benfica goalkeeper Anatolli Turbin, who managed to keep a clean sheet against Clement’s side without much trouble.
Likewise, O Jogo (March 15, pages six and seven) rated the 30-year-old midfielder 5/10 and condemned him for conceding possession to the visiting team late in the game, allowing Angel Di Maria to deliver a dangerous ball into the penalty area.
