The 43-year-old replaces Phil Cowen, who left to take a new position with English Premier League leaders Arsenal. Fowler, a former Kilmarnock player, announced on LinkedIn that he is now Head of Academy Scouting and Recruitment at Rangers. According to The Scottish Sun [14 March], McLaren commented on a post on Fowler’s social media page, saying, “Congratulations James. All the best in your new role.” Former Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell also commented, saying, “Congratulations pal, all the best in the new role.”

In the past, Fowler has overseen Queen of the South and served as interim manager of Kilmarnock and Sunderland.

The former midfield player appears more than qualified to assume this role behind the scenes at Ibrox, having featured in over 400 games throughout his playing career.

Fowler most recently held the same role as he does currently with the Rangers—that of Head of Football Operations at Kilmarnock.

It is encouraging to see the former Scotland Under-21 international back at work after he lost his post at Killie as a result of internal reorganization.

This is the most recent of several new hires made at Ibrox as the team, led by Philippe Clement, improves their transfer policy.
