“Biggest traitor in football – Jamie Carragher blasted for betraying the Toffees

Jamie Carragher confessed he was still enjoying Everton victory early in his Liverpool career after Gary Neville accused him of being one of the “biggest traitors” in football.

The Sky Sports pundit replied on The Overlap (14 March), alleging it was a “set up” when the former Manchester United defender accused him of switching allegiances from a boyhood Toffees fan to an Anfield player.

Carragher revealed he was a “massive fan” as a kid and would still be in the stands at Goodison Park if he hadn’t been a Reds player.

“Biggest traitors in football?” Carragher had questioned. Neville then interjected: “Can I start? Carragher. Everton to Liverpool.”

Carragher stated: “This is a set-up. Today, I arrived in a taxi, and the driver was an Everton fan. He was talking about his son berating him for basically raising him as an Everton fan, and I was sitting in the back thinking, ‘That’d be me’.

“If I didn’t play for Liverpool, I would be on Gwladys Street. It’s odd because I was a huge fan, so even when I was playing for Liverpool reserves, I wanted Everton to win the derby.”

He described his excitement on the opening day of 1996, when the Toffees beat Newcastle while being on the bench for Liverpool’s crushing defeat to a Fabrizio Ravanelli-inspired Middlesbrough.

Sky Sports expert believes he would still watch Everton at Goodison Park if it wasn’t for Liverpool’s career.
Carragher is not the only player to wind up at a major competitor of the club he loved as a child, but he is one of the most well-known.

Jamie Carragher makes Everton admission after Liverpool accusation by Gary Neville

That he is such a strong Liverpool supporter on Sky Sports presently, despite Evertonians’ persistent animosity toward the Premier League’s top broadcast partner, is a frequent source of dissatisfaction among fans of other teams.

He may comment on the Toffees’ current situation more than anyone, but his opinion is undoubtedly different than it would have been had he remained the fan he was as a child.

With Everton still waiting for a response from the league of 777 Partners’ proposed takeover of the club, and having been hit by one points deduction and under threat of another, there has been a great deal of unhappiness at the coverage of the Toffees’ plight in recent months.

The fact that the guidelines that have already seen the team break expenditure limitations twice are about to be abolished will not have impressed the fanbase any further.

There is often the impression that if Everton had a high-profile pundit arguing their case in the same way that Liverpool and Manchester United do, the club would not have had such a difficult season, but while Carragher began with strong ties to one side of the Merseyside derby, he is now firmly rooted on the other.
