Ally McCoist calls John Lundstram’s actions against Benfica at Ibrox “unacceptable.”
John Lundstram, a midfielder for Rangers, came under fire from Ally McCoist for letting Angel Di Maria pass him by during the match against Benfica.
Benfica gained control and Lundstram was out of position as they advanced, but they were unable to convert the opportunity.
The Portuguese visitors proceeded to win the second leg of the Europa League last-16 on Thursday, March 14, 1-0, to advance 3-2 overall.
McCoist stated [March 14, 6:24 p.m.] during TNT Sports’ live broadcast of the match: “I don’t mind Lundstram giving the ball away – he takes his mind off it and it’s accidental.”
However, what comes next is intolerable. Di Maria cannot possibly be let inside; it is not feasible.
Rangers are eliminated from the Europa League by Benfica.
Although Lundstram has been outstanding this season, he did not have the best night for Rangers—nor did any other home player—on a dismal day.
The most likely goal for Benfica was always a breakaway from Rafa Silva, and the Gers were eliminated from Europe as a result.
Too many individual mistakes were made, and the team’s configuration allowed the opposition to frequently move ahead.
Rangers put all the effort to achieve a 2-2 draw in the first leg, but they were unable to complete the task at home.
Though Philippe Clement is extremely disappointed with the result, the season still has a chance to produce a domestic treble.
If that is to happen, we must take something away from this heartbreaking loss at Ibrox.
