Points deduction for Rangers suggested following “sickening” incident: “It would be mayhem”

Tam McManus has suggested deducting points for unsuitable shouting following the events of Sunday’s Rangers vs. Hibernian game (10 March).

The pundit described the Gers fans’ offensive chants directed at Hibs forward Martin Boyle during the encounter at Easter Road as “terrible” and “sickening” in a piece published on the Daily Record website on March 13.

When talking about the possible punishments that teams can receive for the behavior of their supporters,

McManus said that deducting points might be “the way forward,” but he also acknowledged that this would lead to “mayhem.”

According to McManus, “Hibs’ statement acknowledges the problem in their own support.”

It’s about time more clubs followed suit. It appears that Sunday marked a sea change. This newspaper is not permitted to print the deplorable cries that Martin Boyle was subjected to from Rangers supporters.

“This isn’t limited to Rangers; every club has this issue. It’s pervasive. It’s obvious that Hibs is tired of putting their players and supporters through this.

They want the fans to feel safe when they attend games. Will reducing the number of allocations change anything? Does it matter if there are 1,500 or 3,500 spectators? The threat remains that the chants will still be heard.

“The chanting is inappropriate, especially from the Old Firm, but how do you control it?” Shall we begin fining clubs? The major clubs won’t be particularly affected by that unless there were significant penalties given out.

Or should we start docking teams points and go all out? Perhaps that is the best course of action, and the police would have to enforce that,

but can you imagine the uproar? There would be chaos. The truth is that this is a societal issue, and it is up to the individual to acknowledge that they are out of order.

It’s obvious that there is a problem with Scottish football, and given how long it’s been going on, solving it won’t be simple for the authorities.

The controversy around flares is still being discussed, and many people are keeping a close eye on Scottish fan behavior.

However, some of the chanting that is audible is unbecoming and has no place in a sports stadium.

Even though they have their roots in deeper problems, there’s no justification for such things to be sung and for football to once more take a backseat.

Point deductions are extremely unlikely to be implemented because it would be unfair to the teams and the average fan, but this is a topic that isn’t going to go away anytime soon.
